I accidentally named my project similar to your project

Postby samlev » Nov 01, 2010 3:47 pm

OK, simple run down. I started an open source project called Mantis Simple Call Centre. After spending some time developing it, I discovered Mantis BT.

My reason for posting here is not to advertise my own system, but to gauge the feeling of the developers of Mantis BT as to if they have a major issue with me keeping the name on my own project.

I don't feel that they're competing for market share at all (Mantis BT is a task/bug tracker; Mantis Simple Call Centre is a call tracker, wholly unsuited to the job of tracking actual tasks, and it will never grow into a task tracker), and I really hope that they can co-exist without clashes or problems.

I'm not trying to tread on toes, or infringe on anything; I just picked a name that I really liked, then found out (some time well into development) about another project using a similar name.

Let me know if you have any major issues/would like to discuss.

Thanks, Sam.

I've subscribed to the list, and tried sending an email to it, but it rejected the email.

Yeah, tried that. I got the posted response after I sent to mantisbt-dev@lists.sourceforge.net

Not sure what the problem is.

Is it OK for you if I try to post this to the list and CC you with the email address you use for this forum?

I've decided on a rename (which doesn't require a major rebranding) if required. I would change to 'Sphodro' (from Sphodromantis, with a backronym of Simple PHOne Digital Record Organizer)

It's not perfect, but it should resolve the naming conflict.

In respect to the list, I've tried to send a second time, and removed my homepage URL from my signature, and it seems like that may have taken. Thanks anyway, though.

Aaaand the name has changed again to MICO. I didn't get a second bounce from the dev list, but I've seen no response either, so maybe if you could post on my behalf, that would be nice.

MICO stands for Mantis Inbound Call Organiser, but all the branding, etc. is as MICO.

Once again, I don't think that the systems will in any way be competing for users.
