Mantis is very mature and flexible system. It can be easily modified to fit the way you need to work rather than forcing you to adapt to the software. The only fault I could pick with Mantis is that it has labeled itself as a bug tracker. It can do far more than this. It is an effective project management tool, both for internal task management and client communication.

Since we're a web company and we have staff that does projects like this one, we have tried to do a custom app instead of using Mantis. We gave up after a week and decided that Mantis is the way to go. After changing it a bit to add a few reports and get rid of the extras that were not needed, this works perfect for us. I just started at the company about a month ago. When I started they had no type of call tracking whatsoever in place. We tried a few different ones and were impressed, but when it came to privacy, it was a no go. Then I told my boss about Mantis, and he said ok try it out. It took me awhile to install and configure it because I've had no prior PHP, SQL, or web server experience but it went pretty smooth. He's definitely impressed with the results of this open sourced project compared to other commercial products out there. Very nice work.
