Gmail Emails Not Working + remove notifications completely

I have read the email guide at: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15398

By default I receive the email notifications to my gmail account for new signups.

However, I cannot receive notifications when for example a note is added. I have tried the various gmail settings posted across the forums with no result.

I have my hosting setup to use remote email (with gmail).

Ideally I would like this to work but I don't like the idea of including my gmail password within the config php file so I may just disable them completely if I must do this.

If I can't get it working then I would want to disable all notifications, how can I do this? The config file states:

* Allow email notification.
* Set to ON to enable email notifications, OFF to disable them. Note that
* disabling email notifications has no effect on emails generated as part
* of the user signup process. When set to OFF, the password reset feature
* is disabled. Additionally, notifications of administrators updating
* accounts are not sent to users.

Which doesn't really help as it doesn't tell me how to disable all notifications.
