Signup Captcha

Hi Guys:
I have a problem viewing captcha on the signup page. I am using the following
Xampp 1.8.0 and
mantisbt-1.2.11

I have installed the same mantisbt-1.2.11 on Xampp 1.7.3 and I can see the captacha there but not on the Xampp 1.8.0.
Any ideas what I may be doing wrong?

Check for installed PHP extensions, IIRC you need the GD extension for the captcha.

I have a very basic knowledge of PHP. Can you tell me what is GD extenssion and why was it working with Xampp 1.7.3 and why not with Xampp 1.8.0. Do I need to revert back to xampp 1.7.3?

I recommend it at the moment, also because XAMPP 1.8.0 is quite new, not that stable and comes with PHP 5.4 (where some known bugs exist with MantisBT)
