Summary0007994: New Mantis Logo
Description

We have been working for sometime on settling on a Mantis Logo and I think we are getting there (see http://www.mantisbt.org/logo/ ). The one we are currently using is more interesting than the previous one. However, we don't have the vector graphics for it and it is not very easy to work with for all variants of the logos that are needed (e.g. favicon, etc). Due to not being rectangular, it can sometime take more space that I would like.

This issue is to track the work in this area and to get feedback from Mantis users so that we can come up with a great Mantis logo.

Thanks in advance for all graphics and contributors and for feedback on such options.

Graphic abstraction is good for new logo, but the mantis seems E.T. ;)
Maybe a front view, like actual logo, with blank lines as borders could be better. Just my honest opinion.

I agree with Bithunter. Probably have Spielberg's lawyers calling if you use this one! :D

All kidding aside, I like the text portion of this one, not the picture, though.

Number 11 from the /logo/ page is really professional looking, even if it isn't a mantis, but I can see how a favicon might be a problem.

I also like the top-left one of Number 7.

But isn't the top-left one of Number 7 wrong? I was always under the impression that the mantis is a bug-hunting insect, thus the name for the system. To hunt the hunter just seems, well, wrong to me... :)

I really like the current one (that's number 9, I think; correct?); it's a pity there's no vector version available. Is nobody around who could re-create it in SVG using Inkscape?

But that wouldn't help much in the not-being-rectangular apartment, I guess.

I'm using mantis in an professional environment, therefore I'd stick to the simple mantis logo No. 2 (BTW: There is 2 times a No. 1 logo...).
Suppose I'd have serious throuble with my managers (and users) if I had to use one of the other logos with the real bug.

Number 1b (as in 1.0.6) is pretty good. One of the reasons is that its main color go well together with #c8c8e8 color already used in Mantis. The other reason is the availability of all the needed sizes (favicon, small banner etc).

Number 1a looks fine, too. The advantage is that the mantis itself is depicted (in severe silhouette manner). The disadvantages are the main color (or you should replace #c8c8e8 in the CSS and code, too) and the one and only size by now. Besides, I'm not sure that you need two shades of gray under the silhouette; one may be enough.

jsch: Superb! Great work, I really like it, and with the SVG version it should be no problem to do all sizes and formats one needs.

The 16x16 versions seem a bit fuzzy to me, perhaps they can be changed to look a little bit sharper; and the mantis could be placed more in the center for those versions as well.

But anyway, I think we found the new logo for Mantis, haven't we? :-)

Thanks jsch for the great work. I think your suggestions are really nice. A couple of comments:

  1. Please attach the vector files.

  2. Regarding the description of Mantis, we have options like:
    a. bug tracking system
    b. issue tracking system
    c. web-based bug tracking system
    d. web-based issue tracking system

Although Mantis has transitioned to a Issue Tracking system, it is still known as Mantis Bug Tracker and this might be a reason to keep it as a or c.

Regarding the rounded square logo, it would be nice to see a prototype which is similar to favicon, i.e. nothing going out of the square.

Also would be great if you can provide the button suggestions, i.e. a replacement candidate for the one at the bottom right of this page.

I like the second column of favicons in fav_test.png. They are less fuzzy.

Just one person's opinion...

I prefer the "mantis5" (profile mantis facing right) to the others, and in green. Alternately, the last one in the sample01 (the profile), but facing right rather than left. I just prefer profiles, for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that it leads your eye to the center of the page (which is why facing left would be bad, leads your eye off the edge).

As far as words to use:

  • suggest leave off "web-based" in the verbage. 1) its redundant, at least within the context of the webapp itself and 2) its too limiting, considering the capabilities provided by MantisConnect.... it can be more than web-based anymore (yep, I just put in MC, so I can play with Mylar)

  • prefer the word "bug" to "issue". No shame in calling yourself a "bug tracker". I've no idea what it means to say "mantis transitioned to an issue tracker".... as far as I'm concerned, bug is synonymous with issue, except these days people prefer to say "issue" because of the whole political-correct-wussiness, IMO. That, and "software has bugs" vs. "people have issues" (mental problems), so I prefer "bug" when talking about software. I suppose if you don't like "bug" you could always try "change request".

Looking forward to the new stuff regardless how it turns out, the colored boxes in 1.0.3 (ok, I haven't updated lately) are very plain-looking by comparison.

Given that we renamed Mantis to MantisBT. It would be great if we can get a modified version of the current logo that includes "BT". Note that the BT could follow the same style as Mantis but could be different as well.

Also for the proposed logo, it would be great if we can revise to include BT as well.

Thanks everyone for your help.

We essentially just need an SVG version of the current logo (which we only have as a low resolution .gif). Personally I like the style of the Mantis creature, but don't like the text in the logo. So if anyone is interested in helping out with this task, feel free to change the text (make sure it reads MantisBT instead of Mantis though)... but it'd probably be best to keep the creature more or less as-is. Also notice how the creature is in the "M" position.

Hi fabsh, I'm the one who forwarded the request to the Fedora Artwork team.

As dhx said, keeping the mantis in the logo is the easiest path; of course, if you want to explore other ideas we can also evaluate some alternate proposal.

I can convert the mantis itself to an SVG by basically tracing it by hand/automatically. Do you want the font changed too, or just "BT" added? I could also supply a version without text, of course...

That'd be a fantastic help to this project!

I'm pretty sure it's safe for me to say the font needs changing. It looks like Microsoft WordArt (never a good thing)!

And a verison of the logo without the text would be extremely valuable as well, especially when we need a small "button sized" logo (probably square proportions).

As giallu mentioned, creativity and artistic freedom with redesigning Mantis' logo is very much welcomed.

I dont like any of the fonts proposed at MantisBT_Logos_Transparent.png :)

I´ve uploaded "MantisBT" with Aller and Sansation, both free fonts. Maybe a little playing with kerning and test with non-bold could enhance and make the logo text exclusive and unique.

Why so big? One loses so much room at the top of the page.
First thing i do, is to remove it (i do leave it at the bottom though).
If you really want to keep it like that, it should be more integrated with the menu area. Make a double menu line aside of the logo or at least something that avoids losing all the space.

I'm re-activating the effort to improve / change the logo. Here the guidelines that I've in mind:

  • Text should be "MantisBT" rather than "Mantis".

  • I would like to the logo to reflect elegance, professionalism and simplicity.

  • Consider using a unique/sophisticated font for the text.

  • The logo should work well in color and grayscale. The simpler the better here. We should have a simple version, that can be enhanced with lighting in case of the web version.

  • The logo should work well on paper, business cards, t-shirt, mugs and web.

  • The logo should be available in image and vector formats (e.g. PNG, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator)

  • The logo should work on light or dark backgrounds. Ideally achieved by inverting the colors or using some similar trick.

  • If we go with the mix of picture and text, then ideally, it should be easy to use the picture part on its own to become the application icon. At the moment, they are stuck together. Not a hard rule, but communicates simplicity.

  • Having a Mantis that can be used in a variety of ways would be really nice. For example, imaging having the Mantis feature in banners that we are to design in the future. This is like how the Android Robot is used in so many different wants.

  • The logo shouldn't take too much space vertically. The antennas currently take too much space.

In addition to the contributors of this thread, I'm involving a couple of designers to help out with this effort. I would appreciate feedback from the developers and community to land on the right design. Once we do, we will build a button (see footer), twitter icon, Google+ icon, twitter page, iPhone home page icon, etc.

I'm going to attach the proposals that I got so far.

Feedback on zsolt-a

1..7 - These proposals are not space efficient, I think we can focus on the Mantis icons in them, but the layout is unlikely to work.

6 - Got feedback from a couple of friends that the Mantis here looks more like a spider. I personally don't mind the head and antennas in this logo.

1, 8 - I really don't like this at all in terms of the Mantis itself.

jnitro-a.jpg

  • The vectored proposal does a good job with cleaning up what we have. It doesn't address the guidelines that I posted above, but these were not known to the designer.

  • I like the darker green, I like the curve on the MantisBT name and the simplicity of it having one color. However, I don't feel comfortable with the boxing of the name.

MantisBT_Logos_Transparent.png

I personally like the 2nd option on this one the most so far, I believe that we can make it higher quality and add more details to the face and it will look good.

Feedback on mantis5-transparent:

Got a feedback that the use of times new roman in this logo is nice and the logo itself has some depth to it. It is missing the antennas though. This isn't one of my personal favorites.

Color Scheme

The current logo uses the green color scheme which is nice, but the software itself uses a purple scheme (not sure if that is going to stick for a long time), but I wonder what scheme do we want to have. Green, Purple, or a mix of the two.

Do we want MantisBT to be the same color, do we want to use small caps or regular?

Nice new batch of proposals have just come in from jniro. These are jniro-b, jniro-c, jniro-d, and jniro-e.

General:

  • I'm convinced now that the logo should reflect Mantis + Bug Tracker rather than MantisBT.
  • For each logo suggestion, it would also be useful to have the icon match (e.g. twitter icon) -- this gives an idea about how the logo will look in limited space.
  • Even though I'm flexible to changing the mantis, I like the idea that re-using the same look there ties in the old logo with the new one. Plus, I've always like the old mantis image (not the text).

jniro_b.jpg

  • Although the font is unique, I don't like it very much.

jniro_c.jpg

  • I wonder if we should try this with smaller antennas. Similar to jniro_d.jpg.

jniro_d.jpg

  • Like the fact that the mantis is not the one controlling in this logo, but is being controlled.
  • Like the smaller antennas.
  • Too much vertical space.
  • I wonder how the logo will look with the mantis on the right.

jniro_e.jpg

  • Very nice Mantis from the side.
  • I like the idea of using the Mantis as the M. I was thinking of this earlier, but couldn't visualize it in a nice way.
  • The font doesn't work very well with the M. Feels like this should go with some font that looks like hand writing.
  • Too much vertical space, not sure how the compact logo would look like. I'm sure it M can be compacted a bit.
  • The mantis see to be controlling.

I like that brazilian-looking-like Mantis (jniro_e). I wonder why :D

jniro_d is good. To get rid of vertical space and also use the mantis as the M, i've attached a mod.

But IMO the best is the simplicity of jniro_c. Brings the old logo with a modern viewing.

I quite like the mantis in the cross-hairs (Jniro-D), but I think it would be better if the logo were on the left-hand side (or maybe the right as Victor said). Not so sure about the orange background though - maybe keep that transparent.

I'm not a big fan of any of the proposed fonts so far. I personally tend to prefer lower case letters (i.e. Mantis, not MANTIS)

Having "bug tracker" as a tagline in small font below looks really good, even more so when it's less wide and right-aligned as in B,C,D.

@Dentxinho, what makes "E" Brazilian-looking ?

@dregad,
It was a bit of enthusiasm from me, but take a look:

Not only about Rio 2016, but various logos related to Brasil that have a 'M' remember Sugarloaf's curves. Also, the mantis colors on Jniro-E are green and a yellow-close green.

The mantis is our friend (it eats bugs) so I wouldn't put it in the cross-hairs as a target. Other than that, the version of the mantis in jniro_d looks the most friendly to me, slightly different from what's in jniro_c

I wouldn't use the image as a letter M in the name, it just reads "antis" until you know the name is "Mantis". (eg. in Jniro_D_dentxinho_1)

I'd pick a relatively simple font in one colour, for example as in mantis_t1 (with the mantis icon in one colour as well, it actually looks quite crisp and professional to me, but I like the Mantis more as a friend than as a bug)

Looks like jniro_c is the winner so far. Here are some ideas to try out next:

  1. Try the smaller antennas (I like the current one, but want to check if we can get away with smaller ones to save vertical space).
  2. Try other fonts (we can even have an image that focuses on the different fonts), I may even upload one like this.
  3. Try the curved shading instead of straight line.
  4. Try no shading.

jniro_01 to jniro_05 just came in. However, they were based on jniro_d instead of jniro_c. However, the main new work is around the fonts. I like the all lowercase version and combined it with the normal mantis without the crosshair in jniro_vboctor_1.

Added the jniro_01_b and jniro_04_b in place on both login page and the page header of MantisBT and attached some screenshots.

Here are some thoughts:

  1. It may be worth having the login page logo larger size than the header size.
  2. I like the boldness of jniro_04_b compared to jniro_01_b. On the other hand, jniro_01_b seems more unique.

Leaning more now towards jniro_04_b...

I think that the latest jniro logos are all fine and worthy of a new logo.

One point I'd like to make is that on all pages except the login page we should probably aim for a logo which is not very tall, to save some vertical space.

At the moment I prefer Jniro_04_b, although I don't really like the "s" of this font.

The horizontal alignment of "B" "U" "G" matches quite good the "m" in
Jniro_01_b and Jniro_03_b
acceptable in Jniro_02_b
not that good: Jniro_04_b

Maybe enhancing horizontal alignment of BUG and less horizontal space between "ma" and "an" is worth a try for Jniro_04_b

I like jniro_02_b and jniro_04_b the best (with a preference for the font in 02). Don't like 01_b at all.

I think the "bug tracker" text is too big - I'd like to see it a bit smaller say by 20% and right-aligned (as mentioned before). Would also like to see it with capital M ("Mantis")

I agree with having a bigger logo on the login page, but as mentioned by rombert and others, we must be careful with vertical real-estate elsewhere (especially important with small 16:9 screens on laptops)

Would be nice to see variants with shaded/colored letters as in earlier versions.

Just to weigh in, I like jniro_04_b the best of everything. Simple, clean, readable, great font, and maintains our existing branding.

The new logo and favicon are now checked in and applied to this instance. For now, we use the logo as the button at the footer, but resize it down.

Thanks everyone for your inputs and contributions. This has taken a while (issue opened in 2007).

This comment is pertinent ;)
Maybe the "B U G" can be aligned with "m"...

And also, what about the favicon?
